Hong Kong (AP) -- Hong Kong casino company Galaxy Entertainment Group said Tuesday it has received government approval to expand its planned development on Macau's Cotai strip, pitting it against the newly opened Venetian. Galaxy currently runs five casinos in China's gambling enclave in Macau, including StarWorld, which opened last October. It is also building GalaxyWorld Resort on Cotai, a reclaimed strip linking two outlying islands that Las Vegas mogul Sheldon Adelson hopes to transform into a massive resort that rivals the Nevada gambling mecca.

Silver Entertainment, a new hospitality and gaming company established in March by the Andalex Group, has announced its acquisition of the two-year-old Veneto Hotel and Casino in Panama this week. Andalex is a New York-based developer and real estate investment company operational since 1989. SE's gaming licence application in Panama was deemed complete earlier this year, and the Veneto acquisition from the Moisés Haskey, Alberto Daniel Btesh and Abraham Btesh partnership is SE's first venture into Latin America, the company said.
An Application for a members’ club licence for a new gaming facility at MovieTowne, lodged since December 2006, has triggered a slew of objections from an association of local members’ clubs, who are claiming a moral high ground as the casino industry positions itself for survival after repeated threats by Prime Minister Patrick Manning to shut the industry down. The application hearing will come up for hearing once more today in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court with the last witness expected to take the stand.
