Minden, Nevada (AP) - Douglas County commissioners early Friday gave narrow approval to allow Max Baer Jr. to build a hotel-casino in northern Douglas County that includes two 143-foot hotel towers. But commissioners postponed a decision on variances to allow a 200-foot oil derrick and huge reader board that Baer says is needed to draw visitors to his proposed Beverly Hillbillies resort. Baer played the dimwitted Jethro Bodine on the 1960s television sitcom.
At midnight Saturday, the glazed glass doors of Saskatoon's Emerald Casino will slide shut on gamers for good, putting an end to patrons' routines, which sometimes stretch back decades. The Emerald is closing after the provincial government, which wanted just one casino in the Saskatoon area, struck a deal to compensate Prairieland Park with revenues from the new Dakota Dunes casino. The new CAD 61-million facility is set to open Aug. 10 on the Whitecap Dakota First Nation 30 kilometres south of Saskatoon.

Halifax (CP) - The Nova Scotia government proved it has a "conscience" by accepting recommendations from the province's ombudsman to deal with people who appear to be gambling addicts at casinos, a former problem gambler said Tuesday. Paul Burrell of Sydney, N.S., had complained to the ombudsman that he lost his life savings at the casino in his hometown because staff there failed to intervene, as required by provincial legislation.
Concerned casino workers are seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Patrick Manning to once and for all resolve issues relating to the regularisation or proposed elimination of the local gaming and gambling industry. The union representing the workers, Union of Members Clubs and Lottery Workers, said this request comes on the heels of several meetings with Minister in the Ministry of Finance Conrad Enill which they saw as inconclusive.

Garden Grove - An Indian tribe has formally proposed building a Las Vegas-style casino complex in hopes of making Garden Grove a tourist destination. The Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe's proposal calls for two casinos with 7,500 slot machines, two upscale hotels and a 10,000-seat stadium. It also promises a college scholarship for every high school graduate in Garden Grove, USD 5.1 billion to the city over 30 years, payment of USD 100 million for infrastructure improvements and nearly 10,000 permanent jobs.
