Las Vegas (AP) - A Goldman Sachs investment fund came closer to putting a USD 1.3 billion bet on the Las Vegas Strip, as it was approved Thursday to buy the iconic 1,149-foot-tall Stratosphere tower and casino-hotel, a mid-market property that caters to budget travelers. Managing director Jonathan Langer of Goldman Sachs & Co. told members of the Nevada Gaming Commission that the investment giant believed high-end developments on the north end of the Strip could leave some tourists out in the cold.

Philadelphia - The city's new mayor revoked a license Thursday to build a slots casino on wetlands along the Delaware River, chiding the previous administration for rushing through the approvals. Mayor Michael Nutter opposes the waterfront sites of both casinos slated to be built in Philadelphia, saying no one had fully studied their potential impact on surrounding neighborhoods.

Casino Regina is trying to track down gamblers who pocketed thousands of dollars in unearned jackpots after a change-making machine was misloaded. In October, casino staff mistakenly loaded the automated redemption machine with CAD 20 bills instead of fives. People using the machine to make change or cash in winnings were given four times the change they deserved for nearly two days.

Opening in May, the MGM Grand at Foxwoods will have 2,000 employees and provide an additional 1,000 jobs at the property's restaurants...

Casino Windsor officials are putting in a quarter, pulling the arm and hoping for the best. The casino's massive construction project, which has added a second tower to the Windsor skyline and is adding a 5,000-seat arena and convention center space to a remodeled casino and hotel, is expected to be done by June. Business was strong when the casino committed to the project in 2005, but that's no longer the case.

Detroit - A trio of casinos similar to those proposed by Gov. Deval Patrick have hit a wall in Detroit, leaving the cash-strapped city reeling from plummeting gambling revenues and sending a harsh warning to Massachusetts. A Herald review shows revenue generated by three Motor City casinos was down USD 82 million in 2007 while the state’s take fell by USD 10 million.
