The Isle of Man Treasury Department has proposed to bring forward a Bill to update and simplify the law dealing with the excise duty aspects of gambling law. The Bill will replace the existing Betting Act 1970. The Bill would enable a single Act to deal with both online gambling and on and off-course betting and pool betting. It is not intended to deal with the regulatory aspects of the social law governing gambling (including licensing, under-age and problem gambling) or with any anti-money laundering aspects.

Amsterdam (Reuters) - The upper house of the Dutch parliament defeated a bill that would have allowed monopoly casino operator Holland Casino to open a gambling web site on a trial basis. The bill was defeated in a narrow 35-37 vote on Tuesday, the Senate's web site said. The lower house of the Dutch parliament had approved the bill in 2006.

Boston - Gov. Deval Patrick's attempt to introduce casino gambling went down in defeat, 108-46, thursday evening in the House. The vote came after hours of debate in the House and a marathon 13 hours of testimony on Tuesday. The Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies decided not to recommend the bill in a close vote - 10-8 - on Wednesday. House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, D-Boston, who has been strongly against the proposal, reportedly strong-armed the vote.

Atlantic City, New Jersey - The city's 11 casinos would be able to temporarily police themselves if state government ever shuts down again under a bill being pushed by a state senator who is a former Atlantic City mayor. As tempting as that might sound for casinos to cut corners - or worse - while state inspectors are not on the job, the law would enable the governor to shut down a casino for serious wrongdoing.
