Singapore has not ruled out the possibility of having more than two casinos in the future, former premier Lee Kuan Yew has said. Local media quoted Lee as saying that there is an "inevitable progression" towards more gaming revenues in most of Asia and that Singapore would monitor how its current plan worked before deciding its next step.

A controversy between German criminal courts and administrative courts seems to arise. As we already mentioned in our Newsletter (German Gaming Law update no. 45), the Court of Appeal of Munich (Oberlandesgericht München), in its decision of appeal of 26 September 2006 (case-no. 5 St RR 115/05), affirmed that the transmission of sporting bets was not liable to prosecution under the current legal situation, whereas the Bavarian Administrative Court of Appeal (Bayerischer Verwaltungsgerichtshof) believes not to be bound by this criminal law assessment (decision of 4 October 2006, case-no. 24 CS 06.2229).

Neither of two competing measures on next month's ballot to restrict smoking in Nevada dares to prohibit smoking in casinos. The gaming-floor exemption to both smoking ban proposals reflects Nevada's libertarian attitude toward compulsive behavior and the understanding that smoking, drinking and gambling go hand in hand. Preventing gamblers from smoking, the assumption goes, would be bad for business, and therefore bad for the state.

The state House of Representatives approved its own broad changes to Pennsylvania’s two-year-old slot-machine gambling law Tuesday night and rejected parts of a Senate proposal as the legislative session winds down. The House version - sent to the Senate in a 161-30 vote - preserves some provisions supported by the Senate, which unanimously passed its version last September 27. But it also proposes some changes that Senate aides said they did not immediately know if the Senate would agree to.

London (Reuters) - Bookmaker Ladbrokes said on Tuesday it would issue a complaint to the European Union after losing an appeal case in the Netherlands preventing it from accepting bids from Dutch citizens. Ladbrokes said the Dutch court's decision meant its Internet site, Ladbrokes.com, must block Dutch gamblers and the state operator had instigated the legal proceedings to protect its monopoly position.

Conway - Political sparks flew Monday as Horry County Council prepared for a final vote on a 10-year contract with the casino boat industry. A Little River councilman and a state lawmaker called the contract a "sweetheart deal" that will hurt Little River and said they would ask the courts to examine whether it's legal. Councilman Harold Worley and Rep. Tracy Edge, R-North Myrtle Beach, aired the criticisms at a news conference at the county justice center.
