Las Vegas (AP) - Major gambling companies' ledgers have told the same, sinking story for a year: Fewer people are visiting casinos, their trips are getting shorter and they're not gambling as much. Casino construction has slowed or halted from one end of the Las Vegas Strip to the other, more than a dozen projects across the U.S. and abroad have been modified or dropped, and more than 40,000 new rooms in Las Vegas planned by some of the industry's biggest players are on hold.

New York (AP) -- New Year's may have been better than expected in Las Vegas, which could bode well for some casino operators, an analyst said Monday. KeyBanc Capital Markets' Dennis Forst said early assessments reveal that the holiday brought good crowds to Las Vegas, although spending at casinos and on food was a bit mild. "At the high end properties, there was a strong international flavor and that would indicate that luck dictated the performance of the holiday at those casinos."

Strip casinos have been struggling lately to keep up their gaming revenues. Fewer people are visiting Las Vegas and that means even less are gambling. But could the cure for the downturn be reaching out to would-be gamblers in their own homes? Kansas businessman Phil Ruffin says he expects few changes among the employees of Treasure Island on the Las Vegas Strip after his USD 775 million purchase. Ruffin says he plans to keep management at the casino-hotel intact, as well as its Cirque du Soleil and pirate shows. He also says the move won’t affect the resort’s 3,200 employees, including their seniority, benefits and retirement. Los Angeles (Reuters) - Las Vegas Strip casinos won USD 475 million from gamblers in October, 26 percent less than a year earlier for the worst such decline ever, the state's Gaming Control Board said on Wednesday. Statewide, Nevada casinos' take from gamblers fell 22 percent to USD 905 million for the month as the U.S. economic recession continued to cut into consumer spending.

Las Vegas - A Nevada union says a deal between casinos and the Internal Revenue Service to reduce reporting requirements for tip income doesn't go far enough for casino workers given a bad economy. The Culinary Union, representing roughly 60,000 service workers, says tips are down 50 percent as visitors spend less time and money in Las Vegas, making workers unhappy with IRS withholding requirements.
