Visiting Indian casinos in Florida could be a gamble

At least tens of millions of people visit the Seminole Tribe's seven Florida casinos in a given year, and once in a while one of those patrons might slip and fall, or in rare cases, suffer an injury that leads to death. Those are the moments when the tribe's unique "sovereign nation" status -- easy for some visitors to forget -- becomes all too clear. Tribal police, for example, don't have to respond to Sunshine Law requests for documents.

Navajos bet first casino is a winner

Gallup, New Mexico - Eldon Etsitty deals blackjack hands to a half-dozen players, then corrects one trying to double down improperly. "It's my table," he says in answer to a questioning look. Cards flash. Chips clatter. Etsitty turns up a winning card for himself, and the players groan. "They're feelin' it," he says, laughing. "Oh, they're feelin' it." The players laugh, too, because this is only a mock game created for casino trainees.

Impact of Indian gaming law changed casino industry

Washington -- The gaming industry changed irrevocably when President Reagan signed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act on Oct. 17, 1988. Twenty years later, tribal casinos earn more money than those in Las Vegas and Atlantic City combined. "I believe the expectation of almost every lawmaker then was that the future of Indian gaming was going to be in high stakes bingo," said Phil Hogen, chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission.

Attorney General pushing to end Gambling in Seminole Casinos

Tallahasse: The Attorney General of Florida wants a federal agency to step in and stop gambling at Seminole Indian casinos, even though the governor signed an agreement with the tribe last year. Tribe asks judge to stop Harrah’s Kansas casino

Topeka, Kansas (AP) - A judge was told Aug. 29 that blocking Harrah's Entertainment Inc. from going forward with plans to build and manage a state-owned casino in Sumner County could doom the project. But lawyers for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation argued that Harrah's involvement in the south-central Kansas project would violate a noncompete agreement the company signed with the tribe in January.
