There's an increasing focus on gaming venues in the effort to curb problem gambling in Tasmania. Responsible Gambling Awareness Week was launched in Hobart today and staff in gaming venues will be part of the campaign. Gambling support program co-ordinator Gavin Miller says the gaming industry is now better trained in recognising signs of excessive gambling and encouraging patrons to seek help.
George Bush administration is illegally withholding details of its World Trade Organization (WTO) online gambling deal with the European Union claims a lawsuit filed yesterday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Following a 2007 WTO ruling which authorized trade sanctions against the United States for failing to confirm its gambling laws to WTO rules, the Bush administration announced that it would remove the gambling sector from its WTO obligations.

South Africa's parliament approved a new Internet gambling law to regulate an industry plagued by crime and vulnerable to money laundering and terrorism financing, parliamentary papers showed on Monday. A memorandum attached to the National Gambling Amendment Bill said the interactive gambling industry in Africa's biggest economy was currently unregulated and "generally plagued" by crime.

Changes to the rules about how internet gambling is advertised will be debated by Alderney's States. There is particular concern to avoid attracting the young and vulnerable to gamble. The new regulations came into place at the beginning of the month but are to be put before the States at its May meeting. Last year non UK-based e-gambling sites were banned from UK advertising, but Alderney was exempted.
Executives from one of the biggest casino operators in the world have been lobbying government departments about changes to gambling legislation - while dangling the possibility of building a EUR 350 million resort casino here, which would create 2,000 jobs. Dutch authorities intend to crack down on illegal online casinos and are calling on banks to stop providing financial services to them, a Justice Ministry spokeswoman said last weekend. "It is illegal to offer gambling services in the Netherlands without a permit. These companies know they break the law," she said. She confirmed that Swedish online gamer Unibet and Dutch firm Oranje Casino, were targets, but declined to give other company names.
In the UK, a study from the Gambling Commission has found that the proportion of adults participating in remote forms of gambling has remained static at 8.8 % for the year despite the lifting of restrictions on advertising. The Commission is the regulatory body for all forms of gambling in the UK and the findings came following a national representative sample survey of 8,000 people conducted by ICM research.
Owners of the Greektown Casino may sidestep a potential state-ordered sale after a group of suburban businessmen announced it will invest USD 100 million in the struggling downtown Detroit gambling operation. The casino’s owners, Greektown Holdings LLC, already had missed an April deadline from the state to bring its financial performance up to required levels, and saw its debt downgraded in April by two major rating agencies over fears the state would force a sale by the end of June.
