The Dutch government is stepping up efforts to protect young players from problem gambling. Recent data shows a significant increase in addiction rates among young adults. Data from national addiction database LADIS (Landelijk Alcohol en Drugs Informatie Systeem) suggests that number of people seeking help for gambling addiction had increased by 15.3% in 2023 compared to 2022. The data also shows that Approximately 17% of those receiving treatment for gambling addiction are younger than 25. To address this, the government has implemented various measures, including deposit limits, advertising restrictions, and the establishment of a specialized treatment center.
Despite calls from some parliament members for a complete ban on online gambling advertising, the government has not yet committed to this measure. The Dutch Gambling Authority (KSA) opposes a total ban, emphasizing the importance of responsible marketing.
The Dutch government's commitment to protecting young players from the harms of gambling is evident in these recent initiatives. By implementing stricter regulations, providing specialised treatment, and promoting responsible gambling practices, the government aims to create a safer and healthier gambling environment for all.
