Liverpool, 4. März 2010 – Stanleybet, Europas führender grenzübergreifender Sportwettenanbieter, klagt gegen die Gesetzesänderungen bezüglich der Legalität von Sportwetten in Frankreich. Die Änderungen werden von der französischen Regierung als Öffnung des Wettmarktes bezeichnet. Athens (Reuters) - UK-based fixed-odds betting company Stanleybet said on Friday a court ordered its outlet in Athens to be shut again while a higher tribunal considered its right to compete with Greek gambling monopoly OPAP. Stanleybet opened a store in the Greek capital and one in the northern city of Thessaloniki late last year, but Greek authorities shut them down for not having an operating licence and for violating a law that forbids online betting.

Greek authorities have raided a sports betting outlet in central Athens belonging to Britain’s Stanleybet, only a week after it began to operate in a challenge to the Greek state-owned gaming monopoly, known as OPAP. The decision is likely to reignite argument about lack of access for private gaming companies that want to provide sports betting services in several European Union markets where lucrative monopolies exist.

Mehr als drei Jahre sind seit dem Antrag von Stanleybet auf eine Sportwettenlizenz in Griechenland vergangen und der griechische Staat verzögert die Entscheidung. 2005 haben die Behörden auf den offiziellen Antrag von SBI auf Erteilung einer Sportwettenlizenz nicht geantwortet, und bis heute ist man keinen Schritt weiter gekommen. Im Juni vertagte der Staatsrat den Fall. Die nächste Anhörung für den Antrag von SBI bezüglich der Anbieterlizenz für Griechenland ist auf den 5. Dezember 2008 angesetzt.

Der Geschäftsführer von Stanleybet International, John Whittaker, ist besorgt darüber, dass protektionistisch agierende EU-Mitgliedsstaaten die Europäische Kommission zunehmend an der Umsetzung von EU-Recht in der Glücksspiel- und Wettbranche hindern.
