Carson City, Nevada (AP) - A major Nevada casino group filed a court challenge Monday against a ballot initiative by teachers calling for higher taxes on the biggest resorts to get more money for the state's K-12 school system. The Nevada Resort Association, in a complaint filed in Carson City District Court, argued that the Nevada State Education Association description of its initiative is "misleading, false, and fails to inform voters of all its material consequences."

In what several observers state is another step forward to the legalisation of online gambling by American officials, the Nevada Gaming Control Board is soon to release a study it commissioned through the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) earlier this year into the pastime. According to reports in the Las Vegas Sun, the objective of the study is to quantify how many Nevadans gamble online and measure attitudes toward legal Internet gambling.

Nevada’s casino reported USD 1.06 billion in win revenues for September, a rise of 7.5 per cent against the same period next year according to the state’s Gaming Control Board. Resorts form the Las Vegas Strip was up nearly seven per cent, while downtown Las Vegas casinos showed a rise of 12.5 per cent. Control Board analyst Frank Streshley said that tax from the state’s clubs amounted to USD 257.2 million for this fiscal year after taking into account September, adding that overall, it had been a good month.

A slowdown in the locals-casino market and lack of major events in Las Vegas contributed to a decline in Nevada casino winnings in August, gaming experts said Wednesday. Nevada casinos and resorts suffered 4.4 percent gaming win decline, compared to August of 2006, according to the state Gaming Control Board. It marked the first decline in Nevada's gaming win in five months, the Control Board said. "What shows in these numbers are pretty poor performances on a statewide basis," said Bill Eadington.

A complex USD 8.9 billion stock buyout-debt assumption of Station Casinos by members of its founding Las Vegas family and real estate investment firm Colony Capital was endorsed Thursday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The baccarat action, up 47.4 percent, was the big factor in a gain of 11.4 percent in all live games combined.
