Sheldon Adelson’s ties said to have eased Macao casino bid

Las Vegas -- Billionaire Sheldon Adelson landed Chinese government support in his quest for a lucrative gaming franchise in Macao in 2001 after relaying assurances from a Republican Party boss that a congressional measure opposing Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympics would "never see the light of day," according to court testimony in a civil suit here. The intelligence came out of a phone call between Adelson and then-U.S. Rep. and Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Texas).

Galaxy Entertainment, new to the casino business, prospers in Macao

New York: The Galaxy Entertainment Group had no business entering the casino business when it made its bid for a gambling license in Macao. Competing in Macao, after all, meant going head to head with Stephen Wynn, who practically invented modern-day Las Vegas, and Las Vegas Sands, parent company of the Venetian, which over the last several years has opened two properties in Macao, including the world's largest casino resort. This month, the MGM Mirage opened its giant Macao property.

Casinos Trade Mostly Higher As Las Vegas Sands Shares Rally Behind Venetian Macao Opening

New York (AP) -- Shares of casino operators traded mostly higher Wednesday as shares of Las Vegas Sands Corp. rallied behind the debut of the Venetian Macao Hotel Resort and a Dubai World unit started a tender offer for shares of MGM Mirage. A day after the opening of the USD 2.4 billion Venetian Macao, Goldman Sachs analyst Steven Kent was still cheering the megaresort's operations. In a second assessment of the property, Kent said in a client note that the Venetian Macao has a large number of enthusiastic employees and a diverse customer base.

Venetian Macao hopes to kick off the boldest phase of development in Chinese casino town

Hong Kong: The new casinos popping up in Macau in the past three years have helped the Chinese territory surpass the Las Vegas Strip as the world's most lucrative gambling center. This week, the city begins its most ambitious - and perhaps riskiest - phase of development with Tuesday's opening of the USD 2.4 billion (EUR 1.75 billion) Venetian Macao Resort Hotel. It's the latest mega project from American billionaire Sheldon Adelson, chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp.

Gaming at PBL’s Macau casino off to slow start

James Packer's Publishing & Broadcasting has told analysts that mass-market gambling at its newly opened Macau Crown casino is trading below expectations, prompting it to increase its focus on wealthier gamblers. The six-star casino had a strong start with VIP gamblers, with chip turnover rising significantly from last month, PBL executives reportedly said at a market briefing in Sydney yesterday. Crown Macau is the first of three casinos PBL and its partner Melco are developing in the former Portuguese colony. It has only been fully open for business for about three weeks.

Raising the Stakes for Casinos: Macao’s High Rollers

Stanley Ho (Founder and managing director SJM): The elusive billionaire had a 40-year monopoly on Macao gambling and remains one of the world's biggest casino operators, despite inroads by American companies, such as Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Wynn Resorts Ltd., that have cut his market share nearly in half. Ho is countering with more elaborate casinos, including the Grand Lisboa, which debuted in February, and two outsized casino projects, Oceanus and Ponte 16.

James Packer’s giant gamble

Ten minutes by helicopter or one hour by hydrofoil from Hong Kong, the former Portuguese colony of Macau is crammed onto a couple of tiny islands and a peninsula jutting from the Chinese mainland. Only half the size of Sydney Harbour, it has just overtaken the Las Vegas Strip to become the gaming capital of the world. But the boom has only just begun. Cranes crowd the skyline as new casinos and hotels spring up on reclaimed land. And high-speed ferries stream across the Pearl River estuary from Hong Kong like trucks down a busy freeway.
