Making the UK Gambling Commission’s "white list" for jurisdictions whose gambling companies will be allowed to advertise in the United Kingdom ended up being a big boon for Malta. The U.K. Gambling Act of 2005 went into effect September 1, and one of the new laws permits only those companies based in the European Economic Area or countries given special approval from the Department for Culture, Media and Sports to advertise their online gambling ventures.

Sweeping gambling laws have come into force in Britain bringing casinos, bookmakers and online betting under a new regulatory body. France and Greece have been given two more months to respond to legal steps taken by the European Commission over alleged barriers to foreign gaming firms, the European Union executive said last week. The Commission took France and Sweden to within one step of European Court of Justice action in June when it also gave Greece an initial warning that it too was at risk over its gaming laws. It gave all three countries two months to respond.

Sweden has officially refused to meet long-standing European Union calls to open the country’s lucrative gambling market to non-Swedish companies. The Swedish government says while it intends to consider the demands, no changes to local law will be implemented. The government goes on to say it sees the lone Swedish exception to EU gambling laws as acceptable. (Bloomberg) -- Britain's new gambling law comes into force at midnight, legalizing U.K. advertising campaigns for the first time and licensing online casinos that can accept bets from gamblers worldwide including the U.S. William Hill Plc, Gala Group Ltd., and 13 other companies find out tonight if their virtual casino licenses have been approved to start accepting bets immediately, a spokesman for the Gambling Commission, the U.K.'s new regulator, said today.

The Missouri Gaming Commission Wednesday handed out fines totaling USD 150,000 to five casinos for rules infractions. The infractions ranged from underpaying an advertised slot jackpot to serving alcohol to minors. State casino regulators also settled three pending cases for a combined USD 13,500. Casinos have 30 days to accept the fine or notify the commission it will challenge the disciplinary action at a public hearing.
