Atlantic City, New Jersey - A New Jersey appeals court was just as put off by massive layoffs, bug-infested rooms and uncooperative management at the Tropicana Casino and Resort as state regulators were, and upheld the denial of the casino's license. Tuesday's ruling affirmed last December's decision by the state Casino Control Commission to strip the former owners of the gambling resort of their license and put the property up for sale.

Ladbrokes Plc, the world's largest publicly traded gaming company, can't offer gambling in the Netherlands without a permit, the Dutch Supreme Court ruled. The Harrow, England-based company violated Dutch law by allowing national residents to place bets on its Web site, the court said in a ruling today. The decision is contingent upon whether European Union tribunals rule the bloc's antitrust regulations supersede national gaming laws.

Los Angeles (Reuters) - A Nevada state court has ruled that sponsors of a ballot initiative aimed at raising taxes on casino winnings can begin collecting signatures to secure a spot on the November ballot. The ruling deals a blow to the Nevada Resort Association, which had argued that the measure violated state law.

The French Tennis Federation is taking legal action in Belgium in an attempt to ban online betting on the French Open at the end of May. The case will be heard in detail on April 11 in Liège, the European Union headquarters of the three major websites concerned. This is not the first time the federation has tried to counter internet betting. Last autumn it invited undercover police into the stands and corridors of the Paris Masters Series event at Bercy, to clamp down on suspicious betting activity.

A high-rolling Arab gambler is being chased through the British courts after he wrote a casino two cheques worth almost GBP 7million combined - both of which bounced. Ahmed Al-Reyaysa exchanged the cheques, worth GBP 3.07million and GBP 3.6million, for gaming chips at the Clermont club in London's Berkeley Square. After he spent the money on the club's roulette wheel, the casino discovered that Al-Reyaysa did not have enough cash in his bank account to honour the cheques.

As already mentioned in our press release of 31 January 2008, the Administrative Court of Schleswig-Holstein (VG Schleswig-Holstein) decided to stay the main proceedings brought by Hambach & Hambach Law Firm, its subject matter being the validity of a European license for a sports betting offer in Schleswig-Holstein and to refer the relevant Community Law questions for a preliminary ruling by the ECJ. In the course of the oral hearing the Administrative Court of Schleswig Holstein already voiced its legal opinion that a sports betting monopoly can only be justified by the goal of fighting compulsive gaming...

As already reported in German Gaming Law updated no. 93, the Administrative Court of Schleswig (Schleswig-Holsteinisches Verwaltungsgericht) raised considerable doubts as to the conformity of the new Interstate Treaty on Gambling (Glücksspielstaatsvertrag) with EU law and referred a case regarding the state monopoly on sports betting and gambling to the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The 19 page reference for a preliminary ruling, including the four questions submitted to the ECJ, was recently published (decision of 30 January 2008, file no. 12 A 102/06).

Harrisburg - Mount Airy Casino Resort owner Louis DeNaples was charged today with four counts of perjury for lying to state regulators about not having ties to two mob figures from Northeastern Pennsylvania and two men swept up in the federal corruption probe of Philadelphia City Hall. A grand jury found that DeNaples, 67, a wealthy Scranton businessman, misled gaming regulators by denying having connections with the late mob boss Russell Bufalino...

A Karlsruhe, Germany-based court ruled that Bwin Interactive Entertainment is allowed to accept wagers from customers in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Stuttgarter Nachrichten reported, citing a spokesman for the Karlsruhe regional council. The administrative court ordered that a previous judgment forcing the company to stop accepting wagers from these customers should not be executed...

Las Vegas Sands Corporation announced on Thursday that the Macao Intermediate Court has removed an interim injunction that had suspended the company’s entitlement to operate a ferry service between Hong Kong and Macao. The CotaiJet was suspended in mid-December. The CotaiJet service had been operating for just over a week and was offering service between Hong Kong’s Macao Ferry Terminal at Shun Tak Centre and Macao’s newly opened Taipa Temporary Ferry Terminal when it was suspended in mid-December.
