A Norfolk casino worker who stuffed thousands of pounds into his socks before escaping to Thailand has been jailed for a year. Peter Smith stole GBP 8,500 in one night while working at the Palace Casino in Yarmouth in May. The 37-year-old cash desk worker has spent much of his life working in casinos all over the world - but was yesterday told his career was over after he admitted theft.

Brantford, Ontario - Talks have broken off in efforts to end a 48-day strike by Ontario casino workers in Brantford, Sudbury and at Toronto's Woodbine Raceway. Prime Minister Patrick Manning is again sacrificing the well-being of people in the country to appease his religious beliefs, said local casino workers. Kenroy Phillip, chairman of the Union of Members Clubs and Lottery Workers, said yesterday at a news conference held at Henry St, Port of Spain: "The prime minister is set in his religious beliefs and will not see the gaming industry as an aid to the economy of Trinidad and Tobago."
