Online betting companies Betfair and Sportingbet are launching a High Court challenge to legislation that prevents gambling companies outside New South Wales from advertising in the state. Sportingbet chief operating officer Michael Sullivan said his company is restricted from advertising in print, radio and television as well as prevented from sponsoring sporting events in New South Wales.

Sportingbet will this week attempt to break the legal deadlock surrounding two London-based junior staff who have been thrown into an Istanbul jail. The online gambling group is seeking a bail hearing for the pair - both Turkish nationals - who were arrested at the end of last month when they returned to Turkey on holiday. A source close to the situation said regulatory uncertainty over the online gaming markets in which the two companies operate was one of the main reasons why they couldn't agree on the terms of a tie-up.
