Economy not hurting Pennsylvania slots

Pennsylvania’s young casinos are competing quite well against the big boys. Comparing ’gross terminal revenues’ in October with those from October 2007, Pennsylvania casinos are slightly ahead, about 3 %. When Pennsylvania officials legalized slots parlors in mid-2004, some skeptics wondered how Keystone State casinos could ever compete with glitzier, better-known gambling meccas such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

Macau feels pain as casino winning streak ebbs

Macau (Reuters) - On Macau's dusty Cotai strip, the cranes at the Las Vegas Sands' construction site stand idle at dusk atop the half-finished husks of three massive towers, while weary batches of construction workers, laid-off en masse, stream out of the site's turnstiles, many for the last time. After a golden streak since 2002, which saw Macau transformed from a sleepy former Portuguese colonial backwater into a Las Vegas-style gambling paradise, Macau's luck may be running out.

Gaming revenues in the 12 states with commercial casinos have tumbled 2.5 % through the first nine months of 2008 and the trend worsened as the year progressed. That was the bleak outlook painted by AGA CEO Frank Fahrenkopf Jr. as the Global Gaming Expo is taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Fahrenkopf said most of the show’s break-out sessions will address the global and national economic crisis and how it is impacting casino operators and gambling equipment manufacturers.

New York considers expanding race track wagering

New York legislators want to tap casino gambling for greater revenues, but the requirements of passing a state constitutional amendment make the opening of new casinos unlikely anytime soon. Current regulations require racinos to operate no more than sixteen hours a day, or one hundred twelve hours per week.

He took office this week amid a painful financial climate that has already seen hundreds of casino workers laid off, gamblers flee to slots parlors in Pennsylvania and New York...
