Bets are off for Macau gambling boom

Macau's landscape shows the far reach of human ambition - land reclamations have joined up the two islands of Coloane and Taipa to make a gambling and shopping sprawl called the Cotai Strip. Flashy casinos and garish hotels tower over what was once a sleepy trading town at the mouth of south China's Pearl River Delta. But now some of those towers stand half-finished, the sound of building work has gone. Only dust and concrete remain.

From Boom to Gloom in China’s Gambling Mecca

Macau, China - The laid-off worker from Hunan province hung back from the baccarat table as his wife placed bets. He sipped water and explained how he justified traveling to this former Portuguese colony on China's southern coast -- the only place in the country where gambling is legal -- and blowing USD 450 in savings there. "We are not rich, so we took a train to Guangzhou first, then we took a bus to Zhuhai," bordering Macau, said Zhang, 50, who would give only one name.

Macau struggling casino operator Las Vegas Sands Corp. will lay off as many as 11,000 workers after a cash crunch forced the company to halt construction on multibillion dollar projects in the Chinese gambling city, a top executive said this week. About 2,000 of the construction workers are from Macau, and the remainder are from Hong Kong, mainland China and other countries, said Stephen Weaver, Sands’ president for Asia.

Steve Wynn: Casino mogul moves on Macau

Steve Wynn is a man who not only makes the preposterous possible, but also profitable. The casino mogul and billionaire turned Las Vegas from a strip of gambling dens into a global attraction, helping to foster the Vegas ideal that it is a place consenting adults can see and do just about anything imaginable (plus, of course, gamble 24-hours a day).

Macau becomes a not so sure bet

Hong Kong - For the past five decades, a Macau casino concession has been licensed to print money. In the past few months, printing money has become less profitable and less satisfying. This week's opening of Cirque du Soleil's new Zaia show at the Venetian Macao is a reminder that Macau has gone from a sure thing to a risky high-wire act.

Singapore sees Macau as a growing competitor

A former adviser to the Singapore government said yesterday that the island city is losing foreign investment to countries with greater growth such as China, adding that Macau could work with the region to increase its attractiveness.
