But as the USD 800 million MGM Grand Detroit casino, hotel and entertainment complex readies for its gala opening Tuesday, workers spent the weekend scurrying about the massive property, attending to last-minute details. On Sunday, workers checked ceiling lights, installed televisions, adjusted the hood over a grill at the restaurant Palette, and folded shirts at Essentials, a women's boutique.

Detroit - The Michigan Gaming Commission has ruled that it would have to suspend the operations of Detroit's three casinos if the state is forced to shut down when the budget expires next week. The board issued the temporary order today after hearing arguments in Detroit by the Michigan Gaming Control Board and casino representatives. Lawyers for Greektown Casino will scrutinize the order over the next 24 hours, spokesman Roger Martin said following the meeting.

Detroit -- In the race to open Detroit's first permanent casino, hotel and entertainment complex, the locally owned MotorCity Casino seems to have gained the edge over its closest competitor, MGM Grand Detroit. MotorCity Casino, owned by Marian Ilitch, will swing the doors open on its enlarged gaming space June 7. MotorCity also has moved up the date on the ribbon-cutting for its 400-room deluxe hotel to September from late in the year.
