The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has launched a portal to help online gaming companies align with best practices in ESG – Environmental, Social and Governance– matters.
The creation of this dedicated hub follows the publishing in November 2023 of the “A Voluntary ESG Code of Good Practice for the Remote Gaming Sector in Malta”.
This ESG Code, an industry-specific framework, should be considered as an instrument for self-regulation, helping remote gaming companies align with best practices to achieve and maintain a position that allows them to effectively meet the evolving expectations of key stakeholders in the sector. It is aimed at enhancing transparency, encouraging ESG assessing and reporting, facilitating benchmarking among companies by improving their ESG practices.
Developed through a process that included peer review, research a materiality assessment, stakeholder interviews and consultations with licensees, the Code covers 19 ESG topics across environmental, social and governance categories.
It reportedly provides a roadmap for online gaming companies to streamline their reporting efforts. The Code includes two tiers of reporting: Tier 1 for basic ESG standards and Tier 2 for more advanced goals.
The Code is intended to be accessible to a wide range of companies. Entities reporting under the Code will receive the MGA's ESG Code Approval Seal.
While this ESG Code is voluntary, the MGA strongly encourages its licensees to adopt it to better demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and to continue improving the ESG standing of the industry.
The hub, as a new resource, serves as a central point for all information related to the Authority’s abovementioned ESG Code of Good Practice, supporting online gaming companies in their effort adopting sustainable practices.
