The Spanish Football Federation's headquarters and the home of former president Luis Rubiales were raided, resulting in the arrest of six people. The raids are supposedly linked to the investigation into allegations of corruption and money laundering, which started in 2022 and shocked the football community.
After becoming well-known in 2018 as the head of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales was soon the subject of criticism when he changed the Spanish Super Cup's structure and relocate it to Saudi Arabia. This move sparked controversy and led to the previously mentioned investigation on financial wrongdoing.
Rubiales finally resigned from his position in September after a widely reported incident during the World Cup in Sydney, despite his adamant denials of any misconduct. During the medal ceremony, he kissed Jenni Hermoso without permission and acted aggressively, which prompted a police inquiry into allegations of coercion and sexual assault. The scope of the continuing investigation into Rubiales and his colleagues is evident in the most recent police raids and arrests.
The Spanish Football Federation and its previous head are now immersed in a court struggle that has exposed the football's dark side. The findings of the investigation will have far-reaching consequences not just for those directly implicated, but also for the integrity of Spanish football as a whole.
