Lootboxes – Solutions to differentiate between entertainment and gambling

Lootboxes – Time for Solutions, is the title of the third online event within a year by gluecksspielwesen.de on the topic of lootboxes on 28 August 2023 between 10:00 and 12:00

The social discussion about lootboxes in seemingly harmless video games is definitely not new, but it is not losing pace either, because especially at the interface between gaming and gambling, children and teenagers are exposed to increasing dangers in terms of addiction. In the first online event in September 2022 the media- and communication scientist Dr. Frederik Wienert drew attention to the key factors of the lucrative business model of Lootboxes. In his eyes the gaming nowadays is often designed as gambling. Turnover here reaches over 4 billion Euros.

In the second event in April 2022 the problem was discussed with political representatives. It quickly became clear in this round that it was not a question of an apodictic demand for a ban on lootboxes. However, it was appealed to the providers to regulate addictive content, offers and incentives by means of a voluntary commitment, as was recently the case in Great Britain. Here, the gaming industry has given itself new regulations in the form of voluntary commitments for lootboxes. But accompanied and observed by the state regulator.

The third online event will concentrate on legal questions and possible solutions for Germany. To this end, we have invited proven experts:
