China’s Tourism Using VR to Promote Business

By VR & AR Fair Committee

Since VR was first introduced to China, insiders from all walks of life have been racking their brains, trying to figure out how to make use of this revolutionary technology to promote their business. And according to recent reports, China’s tourism enterprises may have found practical uses for VR technology.

Online VR Tour to Give Visitors a Preview of the Destinations
Like movie trailers helping arouse the interest of the audience, a VR tour can help a tourist spot to appeal to their visitors most directly. It is reported that so far, over 4000 tourist attractions in China has taken 360-degree photos or videos for potential visitors to enjoy online for free, and these VR tours are yielding tremendous popularity. For instance, last October a VR video about Dongjiang Lake, a 5A national tourist spot, has altogether notched up 2 million views in various VR content platforms.

In addition, many China’s large-scale travel enterprises are also preparing to launch their VR tour projects. For example, Ctrip, a leading provider of travel service, is planning on collaborating with Tourism Australia to film a series of VR videos dedicating to the promotion of Australian tourist attractions, and the enterprise doesn’t conceal its ambition to cooperate with more countries and oversea destinations in the near future.

Since the hotel industry is so closely related to tourism, VR is now also applied to the choosing of hotel rooms. For instance, eLong, Chin’s leading travel site, has set up a VR lab call XLab to develop VR contents including 360-degree hotel videos for visitors to make better accommodation decision.

VR Equipment Enhancing Visitor Experience
When homogenization competition is getting more and more intense, using VR equipment with quality contents is a good way to differentiate yourself from competitors.

It has been reported that over 100 attractions in China has been equipped with VR experience areas to improve visitor experience. For example, last April, Capital Museum for the first time offered its visitors with VR headsets which could re-enact the discovery of an ancient tomb.

As for enterprises with strong financial resource, large-scale and more advanced VR projects are being launched. For example, Songcheng, one of the top 10 theme park enterprises in the world, has recently announced to invest 160 million RMB in Spaces, a high-tech VR and MR enterprise from America, to co-establish a VR company specializing in the development and construction of VR theme parks and experience halls.

VR Users’ Eager Anticipation for VR Tourism
Though VR tourism is so far just a budding trend, China’s VR users have already shown eager anticipation for it. According to the first report on the behaviors of China’s VR uses, 61.8% frequent users and 59.2% non-frequent users have chosen tourism as their most interested field of VR application. It is estimated by China National Tourism Administration that by 2020, China will receive 6,800 million person-times of domestic visitors, and 500 million person-times of Chinese residents will travel abroad. Even if only 1% of Chinese tourists are going to use VR tourism products, the market is still very promising.
