Indications from the vote counting late yesterday in Guam showed that the Democrats were poised to retain the majority in the Legislature with a strong majority opposing an initiative to legalize casino gambling in Tamuning, reports Pacific Daily News.

Around 70 percent of the 50,806 registered voters cast their votes with over 50 percent opposing Prop A, the gambling initiative.

The Pacific Daily News reports that Democratic legislative candidates held a 9-6 advantage with 28 of 58 precincts counted. Incumbent Democratic Sen. Judith Guthertz occupied the 15th and final slot, with Democrat and union president Matt Rector in 16th position, only 11 votes behind.

Incumbent Republican Sens. Frank Ishizaki, Mark Forbes and Jesse Lujan, and Democrat David Shimizu, were in danger of being ousted, trailing Rector by at least 100 votes.
