Councillors debate casino plans

Plans to create a casino in Lancaster are being discussed by councillors.

The developer says about 30 jobs could be created by the conversion of two floors of Riversway House, a vacant office block on Morecambe Road.

Our Lady’s Catholic college is among 10 objectors to the scheme, with governors claiming the casino would be too close to the school.

Residents have also raised concerns about the plans, but planners are recommending that approval is granted.

No police opposition

Lancaster City Council has received 10 letters of objection to the casino project.

As well as possible traffic problems and anti-social behaviour, residents have objected to the possible social impact of gambling.

But the planning inspector said this was „not a valid planning reason for objection“.

In the report, the inspector also said that neither the police or licensing authority had objected to the scheme.

The Lancaster City Council planning meeting was due to take place on Monday.
