Sprinklers douse 2 fires in Las Vegas resorts

Las Vegas (AP) — Guests evacuated three floors of the Bellagio casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip after a Tuesday morning mattress fire left one man burned and others complaining of smoke inhalation, hotel and fire officials said.

The 5:50 a.m. fire was contained to one guest room as hotel sprinklers doused the flames, but smoke and water damaged the 26th floor of the MGM Mirage Inc. property, Clark County Fire Chief Steve Smith said.

Smith said guests on the floor were evacuated as crews cleaned up.

MGM Mirage Inc. spokesman Gordon Absher said some guests from the 25th and 27th floors of the 3,000-room tower also evacuated voluntarily. He said those guests were allowed to return to their rooms later in the morning.

Fire spokesman Scott Allison said one man suffered burns on an arm and was taken to a hospital. He said several other people were treated for smoke inhalation and released at the scene. No firefighters were hurt.

Fire and hotel officials said they were still investigating the fire.

Allison said fire officials also were investigating the cause of a separate fire in a mechanical room Monday night at The Venetian hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Allison said a pile of large air filters caught fire on the 14th floor, but the fire was doused by hotel sprinklers. No injuries were reported.
