Four developers have proposed casinos in Sumner County, meeting a noon deadline Wednesday for proposals to be submitted to the county.

Sumner County officials say Penn Sumner LLC and Marvel Gaming each have proposed building a minimum CAD 225 million casino near Wellington on the Kansas Turnpike. Two other developers — Chisholm Creek Casino Resort and Sumner Gaming and Resorts LC — have proposed casinos near Mulvane.

Further details about the proposals weren’t immediately available.

Sumner County is one of a handful of Kansas counties that is allowed to be home to a casino under an expanded gambling law passed this year by the Kansas Legislature.

The Sumner County Commission will vote to endorse one or all of the proposals on Dec. 12. But a final decision on which casino will be built will be left up to a special state committee established by the Legislature.

The committee is expected to make a decision sometime in the spring.

So far, the two proposals near Mulvane have gotten the most attention as developers have made partial announcements of their plans.

Chisholm Creek Resort Casino is a partnership that includes national casino management firms MGM Mirage and Foxwoods Development Co. The casino proposal includes a 250-room hotel, 2,000 slot machines and meeting facilities on 176 acres near Mulvane on the west side of the Kansas Turnpike.

Meanwhile, Sumner Gaming and Resorts is proposing a casino on 90 acres near Mulvane with Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. The development group includes Harrah’s and the partners of Topeka real estate development firm MRV Inc.
