Fire damages tower under construction at Borgata casino

Atlantic City, New Jersey (AP) – A fire that engulfed a 43-story tower under construction at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa on Sunday only caused „superficial damage“ to the structure, authorities said.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which started at about 7:45 a.m. on the south side of the tower and was under control about 20 minutes later, Atlantic City Fire Captain Michael Mooney said. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday night, but Mooney said it appeared that the blaze started in the breeze way connecting the tower and the main Borgata Casino.

Dubbed „The Water Club,“ the tower is a USD 400 million addition that will include 800 guest rooms, a two-story „spa in the sky,“ five swimming pools and other luxury amenities.

The 457-foot-tall tower, scheduled to be completed early next year, will be one of the tallest buildings in Atlantic City. It was not immediately clear Sunday if the fire would cause the tower’s opening to be delayed.
