Gambling giant to transfer operations to Malta

Valletta, Malta (di-ve news) – Gambling giant William Hill announced that it will be transferring its online gambling operations from the Caribbean to Gibraltar and Malta following a number of amendments to the UK‘s Gambling Act 2005.

Only gambling companies based within the European Economic Area (EEA) or on the UK‘s government ‚white list‘ will be able to advertise on TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, taxis, buses, the underground and some websites in the UK. The new amendments will be entering into effect on September 01.

It is estimated that William Hill has around 500,000 active accounts and has a turnover of more than USD 16 billion. Nearly 13,000 people are currently employed with the company.

The Chairman of the Malta Gaming Authority said that it is currently processing around 30 applications from foreign gambling companies. He confirmed that in the coming weeks, the second biggest online casino, Intercasino, will be granted a license to operate in Malta.

The Authority has already granted 84 licenses in the sector, providing over 1,000 jobs in the sector.
