Las Vegas: A section of a multistory parking garage under construction collapsed Monday, less than a week after one worker died from a 30-foot (9-meter) fall, authorities said.

No one was injured when three levels of concrete slabs collapsed with a pancake effect at the casino-resort building site on the Las Vegas Strip, Clark County fire spokesman Scott Allison said.

Residents in neighboring high-rise condominiums reported hearing a rumble, feeling the ground shake and seeing a cloud of dust rise from the collapse at the Fontainebleau-Las Vegas.

Allison said work on the parking structure was suspended Monday and the area was roped off pending an investigation of why a floor gave way. He said work was continuing on the neighboring Fontainebleau high-rise tower.

Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Enforcement is investigating last Thursday’s death of a worker and the injuries of two others at the site.

The USD 2.8 billion (EUR 2 billion) project, by privately held developer Fontainebleau Resorts LLC, is due to open in late 2009 with 3,889 rooms, a casino, hotel, condominium and spa.
