Athens (Reuters) – Greece’s Intralot, the world’s second-largest lottery systems supplier, said on Monday its lottery contract in South Africa has been temporarily suspended pending a government review.

Last year, Intralot’s South African subsidiary Gidani was part of a consortium which won a tender to operate South Africa’s national lottery for seven years starting in April this year, beating a rival bid by Uthingo.

Gidani and Uthingo did not offer sufficient information about their shareholders, and the relevant minister will reconsider the award process, Intralot said in a statement to the Athens bourse.

„The company expects the (South African) government to take all necessary measures so that the issue is resolved in a way which avoids a temporary stoppage of the lottery,“ Intralot said in the statement.

Gidani is examining the decision in detail and may appeal, Intralot said. Intralot has set an aggressive expansion plan in recent years, signing deals in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Oceania and the Americas.
