Island casino idea to be debated

The States‘ Economic Development Department has announced it will carry out a full consultation within the next few months.

A proposal for a casino was defeated in the States last year, after worries it would increase problem gambling.

Assistant Economic Development Minister Alan MacLean said the debate had been mishandled and there are plans for a commission to regulate casinos.

Supporters say a casino would bring extra tourists to the island and generate more income for the States.

But others – including clergy on Jersey – say it will increase problem gambling.

The States rejected a previous casino proposal in 2003.

Last year, politicians agreed to allow online bingo and setting up a gambling commission.
